Tech Tuesday #3: Rockman 4 Minus Infinity
You know, there’s a LOT of Mega Man ROM Hacks out there. Some are simple, some are weird, and some take the original game and transform it into something almost completely new and amazing. I had honestly not seen this until today, despite hearing mumblings about it and all the praise it has received, so I’m happy to finally have an eye on PureSabe’s creative work-in-progress hack, “Rockman 4 Minus Infinity”.
As you’ll see in the video about, the developer has taken the familiar assets of Mega Man 4 and has reimplemented them in fascinating new ways. Stages feature new things like falling garbage, deadly lasers, heat waves and more. The weapons have been changed up a great deal, looking more powerful than ever before. Familiar enemies from Mega Man games outside of 4 appear, and the music is made up of tunes from other video game soundtracks.
ROM hacking is typically a tricky business, as anything outside of mild edits typically requires advanced programming knowledge, especially when faced with the threat of corruption and limits of the NES hardware. That’s why it really is amazing to see such a changed up game like this, and why there are not many like it. It really is an inspiring show of the dedication and brilliance of some loyal fans.
There are many useful sites and Youtube accounts with information and videos about the game, but I especially found this Google Site very helpful. It contains useful information about the game, including an FAQ, weapon data, and more. It also goes more in-depth into why Rockman 4 Minus Infinity is such a great game, so be sure to check it out.
