The Year Was 1999, the N64 was Nintendo’s latest and greatest console creation. Already hosting a great line-up of titles including Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Star Fox 64, Nintendo decided to unleash the ultimate crossover of all its super stars: Super Smash Bros.
The game was much more than a crossover fighter though, as it represented the history of each video game character’s franchise, characters that have been fan favorites ever since the 80’s. Nintendo further developed this idea of cataloging video game history with the introduction of trophies in Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Gamecube.
However, Nintendo really broke into uncharted territory with the third and supposed final sequel to the series with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, when they introduced the character Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog. These famous gaming icons existed outside the ownership of Nintendo, yet were treated with the same respect for their achievements in video game history alongside Nintendo’s best. It is here where both Nintendo and Mega Man fans see the ultimate opportunity.
Mega Man, also known as Rockman, is one of the most beloved video game franchises available on just about every system. Yet, the Blue Bomber’s humble roots began on none other than the Nintendo Entertainment System, right next to big names like Metroid and Super Mario Bros. The original series spanned 6 titles on Nintendo’s classic console system, and have easily infiltrated numerous ‘top ten favorite NES game’ lists. Mega Man’s own sprite is an icon that is synonymous with the original Nintendo.
Thus, for all he has done in the name of Nintendo, and for being one of the biggest and most well known video game franchises of all time, we feel Mega Man deserves a spot in the next Smash Bros.’s roster. He is not a stranger to battle; his library of weapons is huge, and his movements are iconic. Any one of the locations he has visited would be a suitable battleground with their own traps, and almost all of his music is memorable and loved. He is a necessary addition that many have been looking forward to for a long time, so much so that we are willing to prove our love and respect for the series.
Our mission is to observe, create, collect, and share every single Mega Man fans’ efforts from around the world. In doing so, we hope to bring both old and new fans together for an amazing showcase that everyone can view. It is the ultimate proof of Mega Man’s impact on the world, and how much it would mean to the fans for him to show up in the next Super Smash Bros.
-UPDATE- Mega Man has been announced for Super Smash Bros. on 3DS and Wii U! Above is the old mission statement, created in 2011. I’m very happy to say “Mission Complete!”
